Hmm, I turned on gpm and cut and paste in X is dead (mouse
button 2 is dead).

} mv htmldocs htmldocsBOGUS


Nope, both mv and chmod were not allowed.

The fix was:  fsck.ext2 -f -c -C 0 -v /dev/sda1

That cleared the "illegal character device".
