damn horrible advice.  i shoulda thought of this sooner.  i just walked him
through poking around /tmp for the corba stuff and whatnot...removed that
and everything worked again.  in fact, after he removed that stuff, i
remembered mark mentioning this trick before.

problem solved! :)
