I guess I'll always be a newbie. I have a good ol' time with an AMD K6 200
and 48 megs of RAM...plus a cheap old video card (forget what kind). Open
Office.org Writer takes two minutes tops to load (way slower than emacs or
abiword...most of the useful work is done using a console...). I use KDE on
Slackware 8.1.
This old machine does everything I need. It is a file server. I use e-mail.
I update my webpages. I mess with programming. I have used similar, slower
machines, as printer servers with Samba.
Your machine is faster, has more RAM, and probably a better video card than
mine...I think...Just depends on what you want...
Could the distribution be what's slowing you down? I know Open Office is
slow...I think there's some Java going on in the background...Maybe if you
add more swap space things would pick up?
Like I said, I'm a newbie, too.
