This may not be helpful, but isn't cdrecord one of those finicky
programs that likes to be run as root?  I know that gtoaster, which is
essentially a frontend for cdrecord, requires me to provide a root
password in order to use it.

Would it make a difference if Alan tried accessing the cdrecorder as
root?
