[NBLUG/talk] Stumped

Using Debian Sarge.
When I do ./configure I get the following;

checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH

I have gcc-3.3 and gcc-3.4 in /usr/bin and /usr/bin in the $PATH. 
I reinstalled gcc using Synaptic.
I don't get it. I've googled but can't come up with a solution.
