That's what I was missing.  I got the parted package installed, ran partprobe, 
and then I had no difficulty adding the new disk to the RAID array!

The system is now rebuilding the former contents of /dev/hde, so I think that 
I can close this chapter in the saga of these hard drive failures.  And this 
time I got through it without any data loss!
