William,

Any chance that laptop has a USB port? If it does, you might try an
external USB modem. I used an Elsa Microlink 56K USB modem for years
and it always provided reliable service, though sometimes after
hanging up I'd have to unplug and re-plug its USB to get it to work.
Also, it gets its power off the USB connection, so it needs no
transformer or other external power. If not, last time I looked
CompUSA still had external serial modems for around $40 or so as I
remember. As for getting an internal winmodem going, while there are
some resources out there, it's often the case that the necessary
drivers are proprietary and for Window$ only. If you feel you want (or
have) to try though, I'd try to learn as much about the winmodem as
possible (manufacturer, model and serial numbers, what it's installed
in). A quick Googling of the term 'linux winmodem' brought up the URL
for <linmodems.org>, and a listing at the Linux Documentation Project
<http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Winmodems-and-Linux-HOWTO.html> . These
might help.
