To add a little to the other useful comments:
I have a Nikon coolpix 4300 that works like a charm with linux (FC4,
anyways). I just plug it into a usb port and it shows up on the desktop
- as a usb storage device. I don't have a card reader, but the camera
has a compact flash card. I remember that under FC2 I had to mount it
myself, but otherwise it worked great there, too.
I've tried a couple photo viewing apps, and I like gthumb.
