Now that I have the external hard disk, and the array is working,  
here's how it breaks down:

External disk:	459GB
RAID array:		464GB

So as long as I have at least 5GB of free space on the RAID array,  
and the filesystem I use on the external hard disk works as  
efficiently as the filesystem on the RAID array, I can expect the  
external disk to work just fine for backups.
