I picked up an IR keyboard a while back for ~$10.
I'm sure they're still out there in the surplus channels.

It is mapped and spaced like a laptop keyboard (small keys/ short stroke) and 
includes a small joystick in one corner to substitute for a mouse.

I've never tried it on linux, but I suspect it could be made to work.
Of course you'd need your laptop IR port visible, or you'd need to travel with 
a pocket mirror!
