Thanks for the pointer to SELinux.  The UnOfficial SELinux FAQ
(www.crypt.gen.nz/selinux/faq.html) has a lot of good info on SELinux,
including how to turn it off in FC5.  It is still not clear to me why
the audit messages suddenly started appearing on screen, but I have
changed the SELinux status from "enforced" to "permissive" to see what
happens.
