I think KDE has a KIOslave for audio CD's that does the same thing.
It presents several directories, each representing a different
encoding format, and containing audio files representing each track.
When you try to read any of those files, it encodes the file as
appropriate on-the-fly.

This is actually what I taught my dad to use when he wants to import
audio CD's into Amarok.
