I would guess that the issue is the internet connection bandwidth being
used up by the torrents.  On Azureus go to tool -> options -> transfer
and you can set limits on the maximum upload and download speeds.  Also
under tool -> options -> queue you can set the max simulataneous
connections.  Lastly, there is tools -> options -> transfer and expand
'transfer' you'll see Auto-Speed option.  I've no idea how well that
works.  I'd just crank back the max up/down speeds until it is
comfortable for you.
