Once you are VPN'd in, what does your resolv.conf look like? Is it the
same or different as the one you re-built? Have you tried
connecting/disconnecting multiple times to see if it fixes itself
(possibly a long shot, but worth the time).

If there is no difference, I'm wondering if you just add the IP of the
nameserver (for a total of three) on the remote network to your
resolv.conf, if it would work. That IP would just be not used when you
are on the 'net locally over your DSL because it wouldn't exist
without the VPN tunnel. Obviously that would be a temporary band aid
until you can get it working correctly.
