The script was originally set to time out in 10 seconds (the -W switch
for ping; ping -c 1 -W 10), but I took it out so that it wouldn't
wait.

Although I think I figured it out, and it was a bonehead mistake on my
part. I was using an IP address that would ensure a fail (1.1.1.1),
but when I used one of my public IPs it went through without a pause.
I'm pretty sure that's what the problem is.
