[NBLUG/talk] Ubuntu 12.04 upgrade didn't go smoothly

Even though I had a perfectly functional 10.04LTS ubuntu install (Lucid), I
decided to try the upgrade to 12.04LTS just for kicks.  It didn't go well.

The biggest problem right now is that X won't accept input from my keyboard
most of the time.

When I press a key, I get the alert bong.  If i hold it down, it will
eventually start repeating that letter.  I've got it partially working by
turning off typematic repeating, and now when I hold it down I get a single
instance of that letter.  When I am not in X, the keyboard works fine
(single user mode, if I manage to get it out of X by sshing in and killing
X.

Nothing useful in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.  Anyplace else I should be looking?
