When I remove the thumb drive none of the applications (Firefox, 
LibreOffice) start when I click on them.  If I click on the home 
directory icon the window opens for a second and then disappears.

And when I tried to shut down it hung up again.  That must be what I did 
before, removed the thumb drive before shutting down.
