Hello all,
I'm brand new to this group. I figured it's time I finally start using
linux on a daily basis. When I started having problems a sysadmin friend
told me I should try this group.
Over the last few weeks I have been checking out different Linux
distributions. I added a 750GB drive to an older Win7 desktop and dual
booted with Ubuntu 14.04, then added CentOS 6.0. When I tried OpenSUSE
12.3 everything fell apart. I can't get it to install and boot. The
install always seems to have trouble with the boot loader.
I've taken everything off the 750GB Drive and tried to install Using the
OpenSUSE installer to create partitions (Boot 200MB, Home 120GB, Root
30-40GB, Swap 6GB swap, leaving room to install multiple distros). I've
also tried using a GParted Live CD to do the partitioning first. I
disconnected the Win7 drive, formatted the 750, and reinstalled
openSUSE. I've done most of this with both openSUSE 12.3 and 13.2.
Finally I skipped the boot loader from the openSUSE 13.2 install and did
an install of Ubuntu afterwards. That got me to a point where I can
start openSUSE from the Ubuntu installed boot menu. Unfortunately it hangs.
If I hit 'esc' from the screen that looks like a green topo map I see a
listing of what I assume are files being loaded. When it hangs it just
repeats the following lines:
(1 of 3) A start job is running for
dev_mapper_sil_aiagdfcdagfd_part5.device (xx min/no limit)
(2 of 3) A start job is running for
dev_mapper_sil_aiagdfcdagfd_part6.device (xx min/no limit)
(3 of 3) A start job is running for dracut initqueue hook (xx min/no limit)
Hardware:
HP Pro 3000 MicroTower PC
Micro-Star 3664h Motherboard
Core2 Duo E7500 2.94GHz
6GB DDR3
Nvidia Quadro 4000
I have run out of ideas. Can someone give me a direction to try? Does
this look like a hardware compatibility Issue?
Sorry for the long message.
Thank you in advance, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Terry
