As requested, the project I mentioned in the meeting was youtube-dl[1].
The installation method I described isn't actually the easiest
available---I suggested using pip, but you can avoid installing pip
itself by downloading the standalone version of youtube-dl[2]. The tool
is great for downloading videos from a variety of sites, not just
YouTube.
