I'm not sure in this case, but _generally_ in my experience, upgrading
RAM on a Linux machine tends to be the most cost-effective single
upgrade you can perform during its useful economic service life.  But
then, after its useful economic service life has passed (a debatable 
period of time after which it's becoming too obsolete), parts including
RAM start becoming more expensive because they become specialty
merchandise.

But it should also be stressed that ECC RAM is inherently more
expensive.

Guessing:  Sense key errors?  Anyway, yes, those things can be a bit
ambiguous.  Congrats on narrowing down the suspects.
