I use Signal's Android app, which you can download directly from their
web site (as opposed to the Google Play Store).  It has a built-in
updater.

I haven't used WhatsApp myself, but a quick search suggests that you can
download the APK directly: https://www.whatsapp.com/android/

As for the credit union app, you're probably out of luck on that one.
