Networks are just like phone lines... lot's o'copper. Like a big antenna. New networks are required to have grounding built in to the infrastructure. Phone systems have for years mainly because they are copper from pole to phone. Like a network broadcast a lightning strike would reach every connected device, if you're on the line... you'll get the message. Networks are separate but attractive to lightning and equipment shorts caused by spikes/surges that could effect all attached equipment. The paranoid use foil rapped around their posterior and head to reduce the overall affect of ... sorry. Got a little of track there. But, you get what I mean. Lastly, no grounding intention is any better the service ground. Depending on the location the ground may be poor, some investigation is required at the site to take advantage of UPS features that depend on ground.
