James: I'm not sure what version of Ubuntu was loaded onto your
laptop, but you can download copies from Ubuntu.com. As I said, if you
subscribe to the mailing list and post your message to talk@nblug.org,
you can learn a lot. Make sure you subscribe because most people
respond to the list, and may not reply to your email address directly.

Just describe how your machine is set up, and what your problem is.
People are very patient and will ask questions back to you to help
understand what really went wrong, and/or how to fix it.

Hi,
Thanks for the response even though the news is bad.
Is there any way to get a copy of the CD used to load
Ubuntu (or Kubuntu) at the installfest.
I assume that that cd had the information to split
the hard drive and install a boot loader.
(I may be using the wrong word here?)
I am new to this, but assume I wiped out the boot
loader when I reloaded xp. I have my two partitions,
but don't know how to get linux on the second
partition or to manage the boot loader.
Thanks for any help you can give.
James:

I am really sorry, but we have opted to cancel the Installfest due to a
lack of sign ups. Yours was the only one!

I don't want to leave you hanging, so I urge you to post your problem
to the NBLUG talk list (go here to subscribe, if you don't already: http://nblug.org/mailman/listinfo).

Somebody there might be able to help decipher the error messages and
find a work around. I'm also sure that a lot of folks will have
suggestions for alternative distros.

My 2 cents: There's a light-weight version of Ubuntu, called Xubuntu. The X
stands for xfce, a
window manager that requires
much less memory that Ubuntu's gnome desktop (or Kubuntu's KDE
desktop).

Again, as the installfest coordinator, I'm sorry to have to cancel the
event. We plan to try again in the spring, and will hopefully do more
advertising to drum up interest. If you have any questions, you can
email me directly or post to the talk list.

sincerely,
