There is a second tab in the alsamixer gui labeled "Switches". If you look inside it has a box you can check for "Mic Front Input". Once I check it, my plugin mike works fine for both Audacity and Ekiga. I still can't use the microphone that's part of the webcam, even though it's one of the choices, and works if plugged into my middle daughter's Windows (shudder) laptop.

I really looked into the available SIP services.<br></blockquote><div><br>I don't really know yet. :-) I tried setting up Skype years ago and couldn't make it work. Up until now I only used Ekiga for calls to my oldest daughter's phone in Japan. Yesterday her fiance got Ekiga compatible software working on her Mac (she's been Skype) so we have yet to find out how good it is.
