Well, what do you know. After years of never having enough time, I
finally stuck my nose in far enough to get this to work and hope others
will see my folly and laugh (or, learn).<br>

I have replaced my previous hardware and software (now running Xeon and
Dell with openSuse 11.+) but continued my struggle to make Samba work
as described in all the tutorials and Howtos. After a days worth of
reading and some poking through the logs, I went home frustrated and
tired (again). When I looked at it the next day, I found a tab in the
Samba config (UI for Yast) and set the smbpasswd file as the password
file. Lo, and Behold, as a great light shone from the Heavens, the
folder opened up, and scores of Angels cried with Joy as the directory
of truth unfolded before my eyes. blah, blah blah. You know the rest.<br>

So, never underestimate the importance of verifying the definition of
each variable in the setup and config of each service. I had accepted
the documentations acknowledgment that the smbpasswd file was the
default authentication setting, but still never saw it show up in any
of the configs. I assumed that it was used when nothing else was
defined. But alas, as default as it might be it still needs to be
stated in the config or no one can authenticate.<br>

I'm finally at a point where I can see the light at the end of the
tunnel for leaving the Windows platform. I've been what my old company
would call a "trapped, unhappy customer" for years. But Google
Calendar allowed me to replace the shared calendars, getting off
Exchange for shared calendaring. Some other things are coming
together, and things look bright. I do have two things that <b>require</b>
Windows. But they're not run very often and, between Parallels and
Bootcamp, I should be fine with the Intel-based Macs.<br>

In any case, I digress. I'm the friend that Robert was talking about -
where due to DFS support changes in Samba, it was necessary to reboot
the Windows system after upgrading Samba.<br>

I'm running (and depend on) Samba on Fedora, so I'm familiar with the
basics. Samba keeps log files (on Fedora, they're in /var/log/samba).
What do they have to say? (See what files are updated when you try and
mount, then give those snippits). What, exactly, is in your Samba
configuration file (smb.conf)? What sort of authentication are you
doing? If standard user security, do your passwords match between your
Windows and Samba systems? Or are you overriding the password on the
Windows system when doing the mount?<br>

friend), so hopefully you didn't specify all this stuff.<br>
