You could alway run oracle's virtualbox and use a virtual machine with your current network settings since they seem to work on xp. I don't know what your resources are like, but one advantage to a virtual machine is that you can manipulate your image and settings without having to switch between OS' s. Also you can clone your vm's and experiment with changes too. Sorry to hear that your nic isn't being installed properly with ubuntu. Good luck with the install.

No, the Internet works under Windows but not under Ubuntu.
I chose to install it. But I notice if I exit the install program I have a live Ubuntu window so it must load it as well. I get the error window popping up that says I have no LAN connection.
I'm using a wired LAN connection.

So right now I am running the UNetbootin program again, but this time I told it to load the distribution from the Internet instead of using the .iso file I had already downloaded. It looks like it will take another hour or two. There is no DSL or cable where I live so I get my Internet via microwave link. Download speed is supposed to be 3Mbps but it is often less than that depending on loading.
You might have a corrupt image. Try downloading it again and then
reinstalling. I have found that if I download over wifi sometimes
the image gets corrupted, if you can try to download over a
hardwired connection. Hope this helps.
Thanks Michael,
That worked. I was able to boot from the thumb drive.

However I can't seem to get the Install program to work. After
selecting the English language I see a screen that says that I
do have the required 4.4 GB of disc space but do not have
Internet connectivity (no doubt since there is no driver for the
LAN card).

But I proceeded anyway and chose "Something Else" for the
Installation Type. Then I tried all different combinations of
settings in the next menu, but every time I try to actually
install onto /dev/sda5 I always get an error message:

No root file system is defined.
Please correct this from the partitioning menu.

I never saw a "partitioning menu" or a place to define a root
file system.
Good evening Alan,
To load your iso onto a thumb dive using windows I would
recommend
software from here: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.__net/
<http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/>. You should be
able to overwrite existing linux installations on said
partition once
you create a proper thumb drive to boot from. Hope this helps.

Thank you,
I used to have Ubuntu Linux dual-booted with Windows XP
Pro but some
time ago, after one of the automatic Ubuntu updates,
the network
card stopped working. (It still worked fine under
Windoze.) I
spent many hours trying solutions I found on the
Internet but was
never able to solve the problem. I think it was
version 11.something.

So now I am trying a clean install using Ubuntu 12.04
LTS. I
already have two partitions set up on the hard disc and
I want to
install Linux on the second partition. I tried using
the installer
program from the Ubuntu web site, but that insists on
placing it in
the same partition as Windows (as a Windows directory).

If you just do the normal download from the Ubuntu web
site, what
you get is a .iso file. I tried putting that on a
thumb drive and
booting from that (the computer is set up to boot from
USB). When I
do that I get a "boot:" prompt, but when I hit the
ENTER key, I get
an error message, "Could not find kernel image: linux".
I tried
extracting the .iso file to the same thumb drive but it
wouldn't
boot from that either.

I also tried to store the .iso file to a CD-ROM but it
is 4 or 5
Mbytes too large to fit on a CD.

I would be happy just to purchase the 12.04LTS CD from
Ubuntu if I
could be sure it would work.

Again, what I am trying to accomplish is to install
Ubuntu into an
already-existing partition on the hard disc.

Thanks,

Alan
