FWIW, the resolution I came to was to revert to a prior system-checkpoint.

After that, I re-did the domain-stuff (and a lot of app-loading stuff;
it was an older checkpoint), and everything went smooth as silk...



Since I asked here, I thought I'd post the final resolution here, too.
 Gotta say, that "checkpoint" bit was /very/ nice.  :-)   I'm not
usually much of a fan of Mr.Bill's product (as witness the extreme
PITAness of hostname-change / domain-membership), but props where
props are due:  reverting to an old checkpoint was easy (if slow, but
I expected slow) and worked absolutely without flaw.
