OK have more info for you... on one system (the vmware host) I can use snmpd to get data from localhost, but the vm does not seem to have the full package installed (despite using apt-get) because snmpwalk or snmpget are not recognized commands. I'm still researching, but I'm having a hard time finding information on this.
