Wow.  I totally missed this.  I like the idea of beers at a pub as a 
suitable backup for no speaker.

This reminds me of Beers for Engineers, which AFAIK is still going on (I 
still get noticed, but never make it out).  I believe it meets the last 
Friday of each month at the Belvedere, organized by Rob Sanville (in 
case any of you are interested).  I've only been once or twice a few 
years ago, but the idea has merit. ;)
