Making a Bootable Linux CD?

Richard,
   If you go with a bootable CD.  I'd also recommend not having linux mount
the hard drives.
This would keep your systems secure from the majority of the students.

Locks just keep the honest honest, and the lazy in entropy. ( Those that
have the know how to mount your hard drives could easily hack into your
systems anyway.  They would just put in a generic bootable linux CD and
boot )
