Edit the file /etc/inittab with your favorite text editor.
The line that reads id:5:initdefault:
change the 5 to a 3, save the file. The next time you reboot it will start in
run level 3.... no X.
If you are in X after you edit the inittab file you can pop open an x-term and
enter the command
telinit 3
to drop to command line mode/multiuser - run level 3 .... and stay there.
