To follow up on my own post:
Mark: Ignore the 169.254.0.0/16 route table entry.  It's just a distracting
red herring trying to pull you onto the wrong trail.

(Given 169.254/16's special purpose, non-routable nature and potential
automatic usage, that routing table entry is precisely correct.  Any device
in that network would need to be reached directly (not via a router) and
would respond back directly to your configured IP.  Also, I see that RH9
just does that now.)
