Dave,
I have RH 8 and used the RH configuration tools.
I'm the world's most entry level Linux user and it worked for me.
Many of those on this list would groan at the thought of using
GUI tools but hey... you do what you got to do.
It still beats using Microsoft. :-)
Maybe you have already tried this but if not here it goes.
It is under the main RH menu > System Tools > Internet
Configuration Wizard
I have a regular modem (external) so I chose "modem"
Forget about the country choices, just enter the phone number for
your ISP and fill out the rest of the questions. Forward.
A network configuration panel will come up.
If you already have a network device configured you can go
directly to this panel via
RH menu > System Tools > Network Device Control > Configure
or RH menu > System Settings > Network
On the Network Configuration panel --- highlight the entry you
just created -- click the Devices tab then press edit
change the following defaults
(at least this is what I have working)
General tab
Automatically obtain IP address settings with "DHCP"
After returning to the main panel
Hardware tab - highlight your modem - press edit
I have the following
modem device: /dev/ttyS0
flow control: none
Save all of this by Applying.
I had no luck using the "Activate" from the Network Configuration
panel.
Now go to the KPPP GUI interface.
RH menu > Extras > Internet > KPPP > setup > new > dialog setup
(Don't use the wizard - the USA is not set up for the Wizard)
Dial tab
connection name : (ex: Sonic, AOL, MyISP, etc.)
authentication : PAP/CHAP (this is what I am using)
IP tab -- dynamic IP
Gateway - Default Gateway
DNS tab - I left domain name blank
configuration - automatic
OK
You might want to check the show log window box before you now
try to "Connect". The log/debug window will let you see what is
going on.
The only annoying thing about this set up is it always wants the
root password even when the only thing I am doing in KPPP is
connecting. I have read the security part of the online help for
KPPP and created the /etc/kpp.allow file described therein but
it does not seem to help.
