Thanks Eric and Ron,

I'd had previously tried a number of additions to /etc/mail/access w/o 
any success, so I
was on the right track and both eric and ron picked up on it immediately.

The additional line in hosts.allow suggested by eric is essential.
(I did additions sequentially and tested :-) ).

Thanks again for the help.

I'm much relieved to be back in "normal" contact.
