Actually, the software tells you when you're approving (or rejecting) an
oversized post.

It's 40K for the entire post (including headers, I think).

However, for anything over about 10K, it's probably a good idea to stick it
up on a webpage somewhere and just put the URL in.

We have allowed larger than 40K through before; there's no hard and fast
rule, 40K is just the limit that the software holds onto for approval. 
Personally, I'd be much more likely to approve something that's 40K of
text/plain and hard to trim down than, say, a large HTML page or image that
could more easily be summarized and linked to.  Also, people asking for or
providing assistance get more leeway in general.
