Is "mail" an alias specified in the httpd.conf file or a real directory
inside the directory as specified as your documentroot?
Also, I think according to the protocol specs, a trailing slash for
directories is required. Many times, the webserver/client will
redirect/be-redirected for requests for directories without the trailing
"/" to the same URl with the trailing "/" when a file is not found with
that name.
