Well, a few things:
0) NBLUG has an installfest this coming Saturday. It's not too late to sign
up. http://nblug.org/installfest/ This does require bringing yourself and
your system into Sebastopol on a Saturday, however.

1) you don't need to (or want to!) download the entire Debian CD set.
You'll probably want to download a "network install" ISO, and you'll
probably want the "sarge" (current testing, soon to become stable) Debian
distribution.

2) You can buy Debian 3.0r2 installation CDs from www.cheapbytes.com for
under $15.

3) if you can make it to a meeting, I'm sure somebody would be willing to
trade you already-burned Debian CDs for blank CD-Rs.
