Perhaps I'm misunderstanding but:
Right-click on the panel --> add new panel

I'm using two myself, plus a disembodied kpager.

Bonus notes:
I've always been a bit of a terminal junkie, but recently I've been finding
krusader to be a damn fine GUI file manager.

And if you enjoy eye candy (transparency+shadows), and have a fast video
card, kde does integrade well with xorg's composite extension. Nvidia's
8xxx series of drivers finally seems stable with composite active.

#Section "Extensions"
# Option "Composite" "Enable"
#EndSection

As you can see by the hash marks, it was a little bit too much candy for
me, but experimenting with it was a fun way to avoid working on the things
I should be working on.
