Just to complete the circle on this.  I got my BIOS chip back from 
eSupport.com and it works!  I'm now able to see the large disk on which I'd 
installed debian testing and it'll now boot so I'm on to figuring out how to 
deal with debian-centric configuration issues.  I'm sure I'll have more 
questions.
