I ordered a few new fans from Cyberguys <http://www.cyberguys.com/> on
Saturday, and I expect them to arrive tomorrow. Hopefully they'll solve
the problem, but I wouldn't be surprised if I have to take more drastic
measures later (e.g. an ionic air filter that installs in a 5.25" drive
bay, to reduce the amount of dust in the room).

I tried that the last time my USB devices failed, and it hung, just like
everything else that was trying to use a USB device at the time (except,
oddly enough, XFree86).
