I should point out, that if anyone is having troubles getting ntpd to 
work, I *highly* recommend that you *start* with running ntpdate.

This will help you eliminate any number of possible issues.

1) Is your networking/firewall stuff configured properly to allow for 
NTP to work.
2) It allows you to verify that your timezone information is correct.
3) It allows you to check your ntp.conf configuration more easily.

I've found this trouble-shooting step to be absolutely invaluable to me 
over the years.
