Related to this thread:
set list
Will show you the non printable characters.  For instance tabs show up as
"^I" and newlines as "$".  I find this handy for the occasional quick edit
of a tab-delimited text file.
http://www.vim.org/ has sections for quick tips as well as
full-blown vim scripts.
