Another good way to check for layer 1 (bad cable) and layer 2 (duplex
mismatch) issues is to run "ifconfig".  errors, dropped, overruns, frame and
carrier should be zero.  If you're in a setup where you should be getting
full duplex, then collisions should also be zero.

If the problem comes back, check that.  ethtool or mii-tool can show you
your current duplex and speed settings, as well as allow you to change them.
