Well, I reinstalled (FC6) onto another drive I had lying around and
added "acpi=force and irqpoll" to the boot options. Still managed to
kill it (total lockup) in about 10 minutes running my 'hammer' script
which generates a bunch of files from /dev/urandom, copies them around
and then MD5 sums them. And it does a bunch of the stuff in parallel.
After about 10 or 20 minutes the machine just froze, same as I saw before.
Oh, and on my original idea, VMWare needs to run on a kernel that's in
ring-0, so VMWare on linux on Xen or any other virtual machine won't
fly, at least not without VT or equivalent.
