To be completely honest, I never bothered to look at those numbers.
That was a very good explanation. Thank you.

Essentially, top will show when programs eat more RAM via a memory
leak, but having RAM shown as "full" in free doesn't mean it's not
available for programs to use. The cached values show the "used" ram
that is available if it is needed by programs.

I was hoping this would be the cause of my random, error-less system
hangs... back to the drawing board :)
