Another good thing to know about is the Quickmask mode.
(Notice the little "dashed-outline" and "red-outline" buttons at the bottom
left corner of your image window?)

Switch to QuickMask mode and your current selection turns into a mask of
see-through red.  Anywhere where it's completely clear is your selection.
This means you can use the paint tools (and even the selection tools,
filters, scripts, etc.) to manipulate the shape of your selection.

Then switch back to normal mode (click the 'dashed-outline' button) and
do whatever it was you wanted to do with your selection.  (Cut/paste,
apply a filter, rotate, etc.)

Pretty cool, huh? ;)
