Had you used any other apt- tools, or deselect recently?
Does it look like it wants to remove stuff if you do:

  apt-get update
  apt-get -u upgrade

PS - I'm trying to wean myself off of apt-get and onto aptitude, since
it sounds much more powerful. :)  It might be worth looking into...
