Hello everyone! It's that time again. We're going to have an InstallFest!!
Here's the skinny on this InstallFest:
WHEN: Saturday, May 12th, 2001 - 10AM - 4PM PST
WHERE: O'Reilly & Associates in Sebastopol (directions on our site)
WHO: Anyone wanting help in installing Linux onto their computer
WHAT DO I DO: Go to http://www.nblug.org/installfest/ to signup!!!!
Instead of putting all of the usual "what is an InstallFest" info in this
and future announcements, we have a link up on our website as to what a
NBLUG InstallFest entails and how to participate. If you point your browser
of choice to http://www.nblug.org/installfest/, you'll be presented with all
the info you ever wanted to know about what goes on at an InstallFest, and
how you can get the most out of attending one.
We will again be taking signups for this InstallFest, so please be sure to
visit that URL if you plan on attending. People who signup and reserve a
time slot, are first in line. We've found that by taking signups, we can
help more people in a timely fashion. We can also make sure that enough
helpers are available for those wanting help.
We hope to see you on the 12th! Also, don't forget about our general meeting
Tuesday night where Agenda Computing will speaking with us about their new
VR3 Linux-based PDA. Until next time, take care!

Hello all!
Well, it's finally happened - we've moved our mailing lists over to our own

didn't want to take the chance that someone would get left behind.
Appologies if you receive two copies of this email.
Below you can find all the sordid details about how to subscribe,
unsubscribe and post to the lists. If you have any questions, let us know
and we'll help ya out as we can.

WHAT: NBLUG General Meeting
TOPIC: Agenda Computing (http://www.agendacomputing.com/)
WHERE: O'Reilly (see NBLUG website for specifics)
WHEN: May 8th, 2001 @ 7:30PM
----
How's it going everyone?! Our May meeting is right around the corner.
We've got a pretty cool meeting lined up for you this month. Agenda
Computing will be coming by to talk about their Linux-based PDA device that
they recently announced. This is a shipping Linux PDA that you can order
today. That being said, before folks rush out and buy one after reading
this email, you might want to take a look at this review first:
http://www.brighthand.com/html/otherpdas/agenda_page1.html
While I think there are a lot of good and bad products out there, I'd like
to hear their side of the story first and actually see one in person before
making a decision as to my own intentions of ownership.
Agenda will have a techy on hand to answer all of your technical questions,
as well as someone on the product/marketing side to answer those questions
as well. Agenda will also be giving NBLUG an Agenda VR3 to give away at the
door prize drawing, so be sure to get there slightly before 7:30PM, as we
stop handing out tickets for the drawing once the meeting starts.
Hope to see you all there!

Hello all. As promised, here's the update as to the specifics on the
meeting on Tuesday, the 13th (that's four days from now!)
We hope to see you all there!
----
"You mean I can get Ethernet-speed web browsing, file transfers, and the
whole works -- with nary a cable connection in sight -- from as far away as
the coffeehouse across the street? Um, I'll be working from there this
morning. IM me if you need me."
What can you do with an 11Mbps wireless gateway to the internet, with no
airtime charges? We can't tell you that, but we can tell you how to make
one out of a $100 radio and hardware you probably have lying around the
house.
Topics to be covered:
* Hardware installation
* Linux kernel and PCMCIA configuration
* Routing and Masquerading
* Security, WEP, and your sanity
...and if there's time, we can go into client-side radio configuration in
Linux as well.

WHAT: NBLUG General Meeting
TOPIC: Turning your Linux box into a wireless gateway
WHERE: O'Reilly (see NBLUG website for specifics)
WHEN: March 13th, 2001 @ 7:30PM
----
Greetings everyone! It's that time again. Our General Meeting is just
under a week away. I know I say this a lot, but this month we've got a
pretty cool topic again. While I don't yet have all the details, I figured
that we should let you know what's up sooner than later.
We will have a couple folks from O'Reilly who will be showing us all how to
turn your Linux box into a wireless gateway using devices based on the
802.11b wireless ethernet standard.
Stay tuned for another announcement later this week containing specifics on
the talk.

Hello all!
For those of you who missed last night's meeting, I must say - you missed a
GREAT meeting. Not only did we have a very full house, but the talk went
very well. Frank and Devin covered building a Firewall with Linux under
kernel 2.2.x very well - lot's of great examples and lot's of
why-you-hafta-do-what-you-do tips and tricks. If you went and missed the
URL of the talk page, or if you weren't able to attend and are curious to
get some pointers on getting started, check out:
http://www.nblug.org/firewall/
If you found last night's talk enjoyable, you'll be happy to know that Frank
and Devin are talking about doing a second talk that will more fully cover
the new features in kernel 2.4.x for firewalling, especially the state-full
packet inspection. Stay tuned for an update about that.
Also, as a reminder, we've got an InstallFest happening on this Saturday,
the 17th starting at 10AM. There is also a computer show at the SoCo
Fairgrounds, so this is a great opportunity to go grab a new computer (or
the rest of the parts you need to put together an old one) and bring it on
over to Sebastopol (full directions are on our web site...see below) and get
assistance installing Linux on it.
You don't have to have a computer to install to stop by on Saturday - just
come by to say hi or ask a question you may have. We'll have lot's of folks
to help out.
If you WOULD like help installing a machine, please do us the favor of
registering at the site:
http://www.nblug.org/installfest/
Hope to see you all on Saturday!

Greetings everyone! It's that time again. Our General Meeting is right
around the corner. This month we've got a really cool topic - how to turn a
Linux box into a firewall. This is topic you want to hear about it you play
with Linux and have a DSL or cable connection at home and don't already have
a firewall or want to replace the one you have with a Linux box. You should
also drop by even if you've already got a Linux firewall, as we'll be
discussing a lot of other topics around firewalls such as intrusion
detection, some more basics about TCP/IP and also how to monitor your
firewall to make sure everything is going OK.
The talk will be presented by our very own Frank Ball and Devin Carraway.
They'll be covering everything from the basics about why you need a
firewall, to sample diagrams about how a firewall works. They'll also have
a setup demonstrating how everything goes together.
Also, just a reminder that we've got an InstallFest coming up in about a
week and a half, on the 17th of February. If you plan on attending for
assistance in getting Linux installed, please take a few minutes to register
at our site at http://www.nblug.org/register/. Thanks!
Well, it's way past my bed time, so I'm going to end this here. Hope to see
you all next week!
