Sorry guys, copied over the wrong date. The General meeting is on the second
Tuesday of the month, as always, so this meeting will be held on December
9th, not the 12th.
I sincerely apologize for any confusion.

This meeting is at our regular time and place. Everybody is welcome.
What: NBLUG General Meeting
Topic: Unix Regular Expression Toolbox
Who: Tony Stubblebine
When: December 12, 2003 @ 7:30PM
Where: O'Reilly and Associates, Sebastopol, CA.
Details:
Tony Stubblebine (author of the O'Reilly Regular Expression Pocket
Reference) is to give a talk on using regular expressions under Linux.
The talk will likely cover things like some basic grep and vi/emacs
regular expressions.
Unix Regex Toolbox: Tony Stubblebine is going to rummage through his
Regex Toolbox. Every day, regular expressions save him time and sanity
by diverting spam, controlling Apache, and searching, organizing, and
formatting reams of data. Regular expressions aren't just for
programmers. They've moved from the shell to the editor to the database
to nearly every major Linux application. Tony will pull out his favorite
vim, shell, MySQL, Apache, and procmail tools, tips, and tricks.
And he'll have some schwag: a shirt, a mug, and two copies of his book,
Regular Expression Pocket Reference.
If you (or somebody you know) might be interested in speaking to a
friendly group of 25-45 people about something related to Linux or Open
Source, please contact speakers(a)nblug.org.

What: NBLUG General Meeting
Topic: Chilling Effects of Intellectual Property laws
Who: Wendy Seltzer from EFF
When: November 11th, 2003 @ 7:30PM
Where: O'Reilly and Associates, Sebastopol, CA.
Details:
Copyright, licensing, and technological protection measures in the DMCA
throw up lots of hurdles to open source development of interoperable
software. Wendy Seltzer, an attorney with the Electronic Frontier
Foundation, will talk about the legal landscape for reverse engineers --
and what you can do to help EFF fight to fix the law.
Wendy Seltzer is a Staff Attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation,
specializing in intellectual property and free speech issues. As a Fellow
with Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet & Society, Wendy founded and
leads the Chilling Effects Clearinghouse, helping Internet users to
understand their rights in response to cease-and-desist threats. Prior to
joining EFF, Wendy taught Internet Law as an Adjunct Professor at St.
John's University School of Law and practiced intellectual property and
technology litigation with Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel in New York.
Wendy speaks frequently on copyright, trademark, open source, and the
public interest online. She has an A.B. from Harvard College and J.D. from
Harvard Law School, and occasionally takes a break from legal code to
program (Perl).

SPEAKERS: Scott Doty, Kyle Rankin, and M.E.
WHERE: O'Reilly and Associates, Sebastopol, CA.
http://nblug.org/location.shtml
WHEN: 14 October 2003 @ 7:30PM
Scott Doty has been working with video encoding with Linux and MythTV to
record Television and Video with Linux. He will offer us a review of
what he has done and inform us on what he has found to work very well,
and what to avoid. This should be an excellent presentation for
beginners through advanced users.
Kyle Rankin and M.E. will provide a co-presentation to work with video
encoding, and include some "neat tricks" with mplayer.

WHAT: NBLUG General Meeting *AND* NBLUG Officer Elections
TOPIC: The Gimp, presented by Bill Kendrick
WHEN: Tuesday, September 9th, 7:20pm
WHERE: O'Reilly and Associates, Sebastopol
http://nblug.org/location.shtmlhttp://ora.com/oreilly/seb_directions.html
Please try to show up a little earlier than usual. We'd like to pass out
ballots and have all the voting done by 7:35. (starting at 7:25 or so) We
hope to have everything counted and tallied by the end of the meeting.
THE GIMP
Many of you probably remember Bill Kendrick from his presentation on
TuxPaint. This time he's covering a more serious paint program that he
didn't write himself, The Gimp.
The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed
piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image
composition and image authoring.
ELECTIONS
http://nblug.org/members.shtml (a little ways down) has a list of the
people nominated for each position. We'll also have ratification of the
NBLUG Constitution as an item on the ballot. The proposed constitution is
available at http://nblug.org/documents.shtml and we'll have a printed
copy or two available for review at the meeting, as well.
Three of the positions only have one candidate, we need a 2/3rds approval
for that candidate to officially take office, so check the box if you
approve of that candidate.
Scribe has 2 people nominated, so simply check the box next to the person
you'd prefer.
For the "Directors At Large", pick up to 2 candidates, much like for
school board elections.
In the future we'd like to do this electronically, but for now the
election is pencil and paper at the meeting.
GPG
There will also be a GPG keysigning party after the meeting. Contact
augie(a)nblug.org if interested.
OTHER UPCOMING NBLUG EVENTS:
September 27th: InstallFest at SSU; http://nblug.org/installfest/
October 14th: General Meeting, topic TBA
November 11th: General Meeting, topic TBA

WHAT: GnuPG Key Signing Party.
WHERE: O'Reilly and Associates, Sebastopol
http://nblug.org/location.shtmlhttp://ora.com/oreilly/seb_directions.html
WHEN: After the general meeting.
WHY: A key signing party properly facilitates the signing of your
GnuPG public key by other GnuPG users. Having your public key signed
increases the "web of trust" for everyone, and brings more validity to
your key, as it represents your identity.
What to bring?
1. Your self (physical attendance is mandatory)
2. Picture ID
3. Your Key ID, Key type, HEX fingerprint, and Key size
(probably just make a print out from your keyring...unless
you've got all this memorized ;) )
4. Something to write with
5. NO computer!
How does it work?
1. Before the party generate a key pair, and either upload your
public key to a public key server such as www.keyserver.net, or be
prepared to tell people from where they can access your public key on
the internet.
2. Email your public key to the coordinator: augie(a)nblug.org
3. The coordinator prints a list with everyone's key ID, key type,
fingerprint, and key size from the compiled keys and distributes
copies of the printout at the meeting.
4. Bring along a paper copy of your key ID, key type, fingerprint,
and key size that you obtained from your own keyring. Also bring a
photo ID.
5. You will be making two marks on the listing, one for correct key
information (key ID, key type, fingerprint, and key size) and one if
the ID check is ok.
6. Now mingle. The point is to meet as many people, and get as many
signatures as you can.
7. When you meet someone read your key ID, key type, fingerprint,
key size, and user ID from your own printout, not from the
distributed listing. This is because there could be an error,
intended or not, on the listing. This is also the time to confirm ID
information. If the key information matches your printout then place
a check-mark by the key on your own distributed list, and if the ID
appears to be valid place another check-mark on your own distributed
list.
8. That's it! When you get home, take a look at your list, any keys
on your list with TWO check-marks are valid keys, and you may
download that key from the keyserver or from another location that
the key owner has specified. Sign that key and upload it back to the
server you got it from, or email it back to its owner.

Please note that this InstallFest is NOT at O'Reilly and Associates. It
will instead be at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park. Please see
below for information on the exact location and directions.
WHEN: Saturday, September 27 - 10:30AM - 4:30PM PDT
WHERE: Sonoma State Campus, Schulz Info Center,
Room 1121 (see below for specifics)
WHO: Anyone wanting help in installing Linux onto their computer
URL: http://nblug.org/installfest/
WHAT DO I DO: Go to http://www.nblug.org/installfest/ to signup!!!!
What is an InstallFest and who can come?
Instead of putting all of the usual "what is an InstallFest" info in
this and future announcements, we have a link up on our website as to
what a NBLUG InstallFest entails and how to participate. If you point
your browser of choice to http://www.nblug.org/installfest/, you'll be
presented with all the info you ever wanted to know about what goes on
at an InstallFest, and how you can get the most out of attending one.
Anyone is more than welcome to attend. If you need help or just want
to hang out and talk, you are more than welcome to show up. They are
always totally free; you might want to bring a few dollars for pizza,
however.
How do I sign up?
We will again be taking signups for this InstallFest, so please be
sure to visit that URL if you plan on attending. People, who signup
and reserve a time slot, are first in line. We've found that by
taking signups, we can help more people in a timely fashion. We can
also make sure that enough helpers are available for those wanting
help. If you need help at the last minute, you can still just show up
and we'll probably be able to help you, but it really helps us if you
register first, preferably a week or more in advance so we have a
chance to beg for more helpers if we need them.
What if I want to offer help?
If you're interested in helping out, please contact
installfest(a)nblug.org or greg(a)nblug.org; if you've successfully
installed RedHat (or Mandrake or SuSE or Debian or FreeBSD or OpenBSD
or YellowDog or ...) before, you can probably help out. We can even
use a bit of help from somebody helping people bring their heavy
equipment in. Besides, it's fun to come hang out with all the geeks.
;)
For helpers, the schedule is a little different:
8:00AM - Breakfast (optional) at an undecided location.
10:00AM - Room open to helpers for setup
10:30AM - Installs begin (event start)
4:00PM - Installs should be done by now.
4:30PM - Installs must be done by now.
5:00PM - Room closed; alarms go off, doors lock, police show up.
We always need helpers, and we can usually use more helpers than we
get. It's a good way to "give back" to NBLUG and it's a geeky good
time. (If you're interested in helping out but can't do an
InstallFest, please consider giving a presentation, contact
speakers(a)nblug.org
>> Location and Directions <<
The InstallFest will take place on Sonoma State's campus. We will be using
room Schulz 1121, which is in the Schulz Information Center (aka, the
Library). Directions and information on parking follow.
Here are some maps and directions that SSU makes available on their site:
http://www.sonoma.edu/university/maps/start.html
-- Master index of all interesting direction-related info.
http://www.sonoma.edu/university/maps/schulzinfoctr.html
-- Nice map of the campus with the library (Info Center) highlighted
Parking tips from Mike & Dustin:
http://www.nblug.org/location.shtml
-- Similar to the map above, but Mike has highlighted the parking
areas, and also drawn a path to get to the right part of the library
from Cotati Ave.
Parking on Saturday is free. You may park in either Lot D or Lot J. Note
that any lot that is marked, as residence parking is OFF LIMITS at all
times unless you have a proper parking permit.
If you need to park close to the building to bring your equipment in,
there is 30 minute parking on the West side of Schulz and on the East side
of Schulz there are two 15 minute spots. Once you drop your equipment
off, you should move your car to one of the other lots mentioned above.
Handicapped parking is available in the reserved lot areas, and on the
West side of the library near the library loading zone. Handicapped
parking is labeled.

Hello,
Elections for elected officers will take place in one of two forms:
1) If we get a web-based voting system operational, then all mailing list
members will be able to vote online by next meeting.
2) If we cannot get a web-based voting system operational, then our next
general meeting will utilize a pencil and paper election in person. If we
do not have a we=based voting system, then only people who show up in
person to the September General Meeting in Sebastopol will be able to
vote.
----
After being acting president without the promised voting and election, my
6 month "presidency" (technically, "dictatorship" ;-) has ended. Also,
other elected officers' terms have ended.
As a result of not being able to get everything together as promised and
host an election, those people who were nominated for what was to be the
last election need not require nomination or accept prior nominations.
(They should not need to suffer for my lack of meeting my goals.)
----
Nominations:
If you previously accepted a nomination and wish to decline it over this
election, please do so.
Nominations are now open with the following nominations and accepted
nominations included:
President:
Mike Egan (Was acting president. Declines any nominations for any offices)
(No other nominations were offered for president last time, making this a
position with no nominations inherited from the previous term.)
Vice President:
Augie Schwer
Eric Eisenhart (Declined)
Scribe:
Kat
Steve Zimmerman
Treasurer:
Dustin Mollo
Director At Large (2 positions available):
Jake Applebaum
Frank Ball
Eric Eisenhart
Removal from office:
My 6 months are over. All of the previous "acting" positions have expired.
While we have not had an election, we discussed temporary leadership roles
until after the end of the next meeting.
We still need leadership to ensure the voting works and set meetings. As a
result, the board voted on people at the the board meeting to play the
roles for one month -- until after the election and the September General
Meeting.
Present acting roles until after the end of the next meeting when members
can vote and votes are tallied:
Acting President : Eric Eisenhart
Acting Vice President : Augie Schwer
Acting Treasurer : Dustin Mollo
Acting Scribe : Kat
Acting Director At Large: Bill Marlin
Acting Director At Large: Frank Ball
----
What to do:
Make a nomination. Nominations need not be seconded, but must be accepted
by the person being nominated. (Yes, just like last time, you can nominate
yourself.)
How do you nominate someone?
Reply to this message retaining the words "VOTING/NOMINATION" in the
subject and send your reply to the "talk" list.
(Nominations must be public and available for all to see.)
Again, I will not acknowledge any nominations on the list. To confirm or
check nominations status, we will use a web page. (See below.)
----
Who has been nominated? Who has accepted? What is the status for each?
I will be altering the content of the web page for members:
http://www.nblug.org/members.shtml
It will contain a list at the end of all people who have been nominated,
accepted, declined, or not responded to their nominations for elected
positions.
Any questions? Please consult the constitution and bylaws and then ask on
the list:
http://www.nblug.org/documents.shtml
Thanks to all who permitted me to lead this very good group of Linux users.
:-)
