Please note that this InstallFest is NOT at O'Reilly and Associates. It
will instead be at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park. Please see
below for information on the exact location and directions.
WHEN: Saturday, January 18 - 10:30AM - 4:00PM PST
WHERE: Sonoma State Campus Schulz Info Center,
Room 1121 (see below for specifics)
WHO: Anyone wanting help in installing Linux onto their computer
URL: http://nblug.org/installfest/
WHAT DO I DO: Go to http://www.nblug.org/installfest/ to signup!!!!
What is an InstallFest and who can come?
Basically, if you want Linux on your computer, you sign up, bring it
in and a volunteers assists you through installation.
Instead of putting all of the usual "what is an InstallFest" info in
this and future announcements, we have a link up on our website as to
what a NBLUG InstallFest entails and how to participate. If you point
your browser of choice to http://www.nblug.org/installfest/, you'll be
presented with all the info you ever wanted to know about what goes on
at an InstallFest, and how you can get the most out of attending one.
Anyone is more than welcome to attend. If you need help or just want to
hang out and talk, you are more than welcome to show up. They are
always totally free; you might want to bring a few dollars for pizza,
however.
How do I sign up?
We will again be taking signups for this InstallFest, so please be sure
to visit that URL if you plan on attending. People who signup and
reserve a time slot, are first in line. We've found that by taking
signups, we can help more people in a timely fashion. We can also make
sure that enough helpers are available for those wanting help. If you
need help at the last minute, you can still just show up and we'll
probably be able to help you, but it really helps us if you register
first; preferably a week or more in advance so we have a chance to beg
for more helpers if we need them.
What if I want to offer to help?
If you're interested in helping out, please sign up for the InstallFest
coordination list at http://nblug.org/mailman/listinfo/if-helpers/. If
you've successfully installed RedHat (or Mandrake or SuSE or Debian or
FreeBSD or OpenBSD or YellowDog or ...) before, you can probably help
out. We can even use a bit of help from somebody helping people bring
their heavy equipment in. Besides, it's fun to come hang out with all
the geeks. ;)
For helpers, the schedule is a little different:
8:00AM - Breakfast (optional) at an undisclosed (undecided)
location.
10:00AM - Room open to helpers for setup
10:30AM - Installs begin (event start)
5:00PM - Installs should be done by now.
5:30PM - Installs must be done by now.
6:00PM - Room closed; alarms go off, doors lock, police show up.
We always need helpers, and we can usually use more helpers than we get.
It's a good way to "give back" to NBLUG and it's a geeky good time.
(If you're interested in helping out but can't do an InstallFest, please
consider giving a presentation sometime or consider taking over as
President; contact speakers(a)nblug.org about speaking or
president(a)nblug.org about taking over as President)
>> Location and Directions <<
The InstallFest will take place on Sonoma State's campus. We will be using
room Schulz 1121, which is in the Schulz Information Center (aka, the
Library). Directions and information on parking follow.
Here are some maps and directions that SSU makes available on their site:
http://www.sonoma.edu/university/maps.html
-- Master index of all interesting direction-related info.
http://www.sonoma.edu/university/maps/schulzinfoctr.html
-- Nice map of the campus with the library (Info Center) highlighted
Parking tips from Mike & Dustin:
http://www.nblug.org/schulz-library.gif
-- Similar to the map above, but Mike has highlighted the parking
areas, and also drawn a path to get to the right part of the library
from Cotati Ave.
Parking on Saturday is free. You may park in either Lot D or Lot J.
Note that any lot that is marked as residence parking is OFF LIMITS at
all times unless you have a proper parking permit.
If you need to park close to the building to bring your equipment in,
there is 30 minute parking on the West side of Schulz and on the East
side of Schulz there are two 15 minute spots. Once you drop your
equipment off, you should move your car to one of the other lots
mentioned above.
Handicapped parking is available in the reserved lot areas, and on the
West side of the library near the library loading zone. Handicapped
parking is labeled.

WHEN: Tuesday, December 10th @ 7:30PM
This is our normal monthly meeting at the normal scheduled time and place.
All NBLUG meetings are open to all and totally free of charge.
Blue Mug, Inc. invites the North Bay Linux Users' Group for a
presentation and discussion of a project developing a prototype device
using embedded Linux. Topics will include hardware selection, kernel and
driver issues, software selection, user interface design, and hacking on
the Gtk+ GUI.
Blue Mug, Inc. is an engineering consultancy company in Berkeley that
writes software for mobile consumer devices. Devin Carraway and Chuck

a periodic presenter before he moved out of Sonoma County, but we
twisted his arm and he's coming back for a meeting this month. Chuck
focused the latter portion of his undergraduate career on AI research
and robotics. A brief sojourn at a dot com nurtured his fanatical
attention to usability concerns. At Blue Mug, he continues his interests

Greetings all,
I appologize ahead of time if you get this message twice. I wanted to make
sure as many folks received this notice as possible, so I sent it to both of
our lists.
This Saturday, November 2nd, I'm going to be taking the NBLUG server down
for maintence. The dowtime should start sometime around 1:30PM, possibly as
late as 2PM. The downtime should be around 3-4 hours.
Keep in mind that *ALL* NBLUG services will be down - the mirrors, the
mailing lists and the website. All mail to the talk list should queue, but
I can't make promises about how other folks' mail servers will behave.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact myself, or better yet
- post to the talk list.
Thanks,
-Dustin

WHAT: NBLUG Special Event
TOPIC: RedHat Road Tour
SPEAKERS: Jeremy Hogan, James McDermott, Dave Lawrence, Jonathan Opp
from Red Hat (http://redhat.com/roadtour/meet/)
WHERE: O'Reilly and Associates, Sebastopol
http://nblug.org/directions.cgihttp://ora.com/oreilly/seb_directions.html
WHEN: Wednesday, November 13th @ 6:30PM
This is a special event on a *different* day than usual, starting earlier
than usual, but at the regular O'Reilly location.
NBLUG is lucky enough to be the only Northern California stop on the
RedHat Road Tour.
Four men. Two weeks. Five thousand miles. And one solitary purpose: To
discover the state of Linux in America.
Yes, that's right; four crazy RedHat employees are driving all over
the country in an RV and one of their stops is Sebastopol to talk to
the members of NBLUG.
It looks like the basic format will be one hour of general socializing,
mingling and refreshments (you might want to bring a little money for
food) until about 7:30, then a demo of RedHat 8.0 for 20-30 minutes,
then an unknown topic or maybe Q&A.
So: show up early and often; bring your appetite; bring lots of really
difficult questions for RedHat that you always wanted to know the
answer to.

This is our normal monthly meeting at the normal scheduled time and place.
GNU Privacy Guard (GPG/GnuPG) is the defacto standard for personal data
encryption. It's compatible with the OpenPGP standard. Augie will be
talking about the basics of Public Key encryption, how to use gpg
directly and several email clients that support gpg.
After the regular meeting there will be a key signing party; bring photo
ID and bring a piece of paper with Your Key ID, Key type, HEX
fingerprint, and Key size printed on it. Be sure to upload your key
to a public key server first. ("gpg --fingerprint <keyid>" printed
out should do nicely) Check the talk list for more details.

Just a quick reminder:
Tomorrow night (Sept. 10) is Larry Rosen of Rosenlaw.com and opensource.org;
normal time and place, details at http://nblug.org/ -- please bring some
questions for him.
Saturday the 21st is our next InstallFest; http://nblug.org/installfest/.
It helps if you sign up a week or so ahead of time so that we know how hard
to beg for help over on the talk list. So far there's 3 signups, but I
kinda suspect there's more of you out there that are interested but haven't
gotten around to signing up. It's only twelve days away.
If anybody is interested in helping out at the InstallFest and hasn't
already talked to me about it, please send email to installfest(a)nblug.org.

Hello everyone!
Eric brought up the question about the HP DVD copy of "Revolution OS" and
our right to show it in such a public event. He asked Augie who confirmed
the leading text of the video on his DVD states it is for in-home viewing
only and not for public presentation.
I have contacted the creator of the film, and he is fine with us showing
this movie *after* there are no more bay area venues showing it. (I have
permission for this in my inbox.) Many of us have agreed, not showing it
yet is the best thing we can do for legality, and respect for the
work. The show in San Jose has been held over for another week, and they
are looking to add a Berkeley show too. After Berkeley, they have no Bay
Area plans.
The new DVD should be ready by the end of September. I will be ordering a
copy of this, and if anyone else wants a copy, let me know and we can do a
group purchase. (I have notices from a few people on this, but will send
out a notice to the nblug list when I have more info.) In a previous
e-mail from him, he guessed it might cost $25 +S&H but that was just a
guess.
We do not yet have a new date or time for the NBLUG Showing of "Revolution
OS". It will, however, take place after September, and will likely be on a
Saturday at the SSU Library in the Media room. If we assume the film is 2
hours long with all of the extra footage and interviews not in the one
given away by HP, and we know the library closes at 5:00pm on Saturdays,
then we can start a showing at 2:00pm on some saturday at the SSU
library. A saturday viewing makes more sense, because weekdays require
parking passes at $2.50 each, *and* the "free parking" on east cotati ave
is no longer free for parking. A saturday viewing allows for free parking
on campus.
Sorry about this change in plans!
